Volkswagen has announced that starting in the second quarter of 2024, all of its vehicles will feature OpenAI's ChatGPT, aiming to enhance its voice assistant and conversational capabilities. The company seeks to enrich interactions and enable more natural communication between its vehicles and the driver. The German automaker chose CES 2024 to launch this upcoming feature across its vehicle lineup.

Volkswagen has collaborated with Cerence to utilize its Chat Pro artificial intelligence platform, specialized in the automotive industry. This platform, categorized as "automotive-grade," facilitates the integration of ChatGPT. This partnership expands the capabilities of the current IDA voice assistant, implemented in models such as the Tiguan, the Passat, the Golf, and the ID family of electric vehicles.

The rollout of ChatGPT in Volkswagen cars will begin in Europe, and its expansion to the US is currently under evaluation. The company assures that OpenAI will not have access to driving statistics and that questions and answers from these types of queries will be deleted immediately to guarantee the "highest level of data protection" for drivers and passengers. The system can handle requests such as controlling the cabin temperature and can also determine who made the request—the driver or the passenger—adjusting the temperature solely for that zone.
